Did You Know – Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month Connects Students to the Future of Farming
March is Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM) — a time dedicated to helping students across the country discover the important role agriculture plays in their everyday lives. From the food on our tables to the innovation shaping the future of farming, CALM connects young Canadians with the people and ideas that power one of the country’s most vital industries.
Through Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC), students participate in interactive classroom visits, hands-on activities, and engaging discussions led by volunteers from across the agriculture sector. These experiences bring agriculture to life and support Canada Farm Show pillars of education, innovation, and collaboration. Students not only learn where their food comes from, but also gain insight into the science, technology, and teamwork that drive modern agriculture forward.
Over the past 15 years, CALM has made a significant impact nationwide, delivering more than 1,000,000 student experiences in over 18,500 classrooms, thanks to the dedication of more than 6,000 volunteers who share their knowledge and passion for agriculture.
Here in Saskatchewan, the program continues to grow. This year, approximately 7,500 students will participate with the support of 144 volunteers, including producers, industry professionals, and agricultural innovators who are eager to inspire the next generation.
The 2026 CALM theme, “From Plows to Precision,” highlights how agriculture has evolved from traditional practices to today’s technology-driven industry. Students will explore how innovation — from GPS-guided equipment to data-driven farming — is transforming the way food is produced, while also learning about the collaboration required across the agriculture sector to sustainably feed a growing world.
Most importantly, CALM creates meaningful connections between students and the people behind the industry. By sharing their experiences, volunteers help showcase the care, expertise, and commitment that define agriculture in Saskatchewan and across Canada.
